The Inner and Outer Hebrides of Western Scotland are famous for their rare wildlife, spectacular mountains, island scenery and remote sea lochs. Our Scottish Island cruises are perfect for sketching and painting with a knowledgeable skipper to guide you and dedicated chef who serves delicious meals prepared with fresh, locally sourced products.
Guests who wish to improve their sketching/painting skills with a tutor can do so with St Hilda Sea Adventures aboard one of our small ships. If you choose to private charter one of the small ships, we can, if you wish, customise your itinerary and stopovers. We are able to supply specialist tutors for both photography and painting. We can also are organise walks and other activities ashore, kayaking and special anchorages that can guarantee you will see the iconic puffins as they come ashore to breed.
In 2020 and 2021 we will have the below tutors onboard, at no extra cost to our passengers. You don't have to take advantage of the tutoring but if you would like to take part in the sessions please do let us know when you book your cruise.
Anthea Gage, RSW is a very experienced art tutor and has more than 30 years’ experience teaching artists of all ages and of all abilities.
During the cruises with Anthea, you will be discovering, through the use of several sketch books, how to record and capture the ever changing and beautiful Scottish seascapes around the boat, as well as ashore when appropriate. We will explore a wide variety of materials and techniques, from drawing with traditional media like pencils and oil pastels, to liquid watercolour painting, mixed media work and collage. The focus will be on developing individual skills and enjoying learning about new approaches to drawing and painting, using the sketch books to later produce a more finished and detailed work indoors. There are several sheltered spots on deck to work outside as well as space in the main cabin area, and everyone is welcome to take part whether you are a beginner or a more experienced artist.
Kevin Scully trained at Wimbledon School of Art in London, and is a qualified and experienced all medium tutor and is an inspirational and patient teacher. He has worked as an artist in the theatre and television and he is a winner of the Winsor & Newton Painting Prize and the Clairefontaine Art Award. Kevin is enthusiastic and creative, using demonstrations and one-to-one tuition to help students gain confidence and develop as individuals. His tuition is relaxed and supportive, and he encourages students to progress at their own pace, whilst learning new skills, and of course you will have lots of fun!
Sue O'Mara is a third generation artist
following on from her grandfather and her mother. Sue predominately paints
British wildlife, but also landscapes. She uses oil paints, pastels and
coloured pencils. During your cruise and ‘art time’ Sue will focus on sketching
and you will paint either from life or from one of the sketches. You will be
using a technique called ‘wet in wet’, and if you wish you can also create a
more complex piece by ‘underpainting’, ‘blocking in’ and ‘detail painting’. Sue
will ensure that everyone works at their own pace, regardless of ability or
experience and her tutoring style is friendly, supportive, encouraging and
