The Mull Experience: Dinner, Bed and Breakfast Afloat

6 nights

Enjoy a unique Dinner, Bed and Breakfast holiday experience at anchor aboard the St Hilda in the tranquil waters of Tobermory Bay, Isle of Mull and from there visit the wonderful Island of Mull. Tobermory's brightly painted buildings line the water front and nestle against a backdrop of high, woodland hills that surround your anchorage in Tobermory Bay - a bay that holds the wreck of a supposedly treasure filled Spanish galleon. It is an incredible holiday location!

Each day we will take you ashore and in the evening pick you up in the yacht's tender. You embark and disembark at the marina pontoons on the bustling quayside of Tobermory, the capital of the Isle of Mull. Your holiday home is the beautiful, wooden ex-tall ship St Hilda that was built in Scotland in St Monans, Fife, in a family-owned (Miller's) boatyard specifically for sail training with a crew of 20, which is why she is such a spacious yacht for her six guests.

St Hilda is one of the smallest of the “Tall Ships” and has competed in several Tall Ship races. There are two cabins, a roomy, double, en-suite in the aft cabin and in the fore cabin there are four, comfortable berths, with an adjacent toilet and shower . You admire the views from her open decks and eat in an airy, well-lit saloon and, what a pleasure it is, to wake up to the sound of the water lapping against the hull. A truly unforgettable Scotland holiday!

The surrounding seas of Isles of Mull and nearby Iona abound with rare, spectacular wildlife. There are golden and sea eagles, whales (minkes, and occasional humpbacks and orcas) as well as dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks and ashore and along the coats there are corncrakes and otters. The island has spectacular coastal walks and there is even a Munro to tackle in Ben More (900 m), a great hill walk without any scrambling. The views from the top are unsurpassed.

Each day we can organize exciting trips ashore and afloat as well as wonderful sailing trips (such as "sunset cruises" and wildlife cruises) on the St Hilda in and around the Sound of Mull. You can even help hoist the sails as we cruise along the quiet waters of the Sound of Mull looking for the fantastic marine mammals and rare sea birds.

We can organise trips to the famous Isle of Staffa by a fast RIB where you can go ashore and visit awe inspiring Fingal's Cave. On another day you can travel overland and take a short ferry ride, to arrive to the spiritual Isle of Iona, the birthplace of Western Christianity.

So don’t forget to bring your walking boots and swimming costumes! The price includes breakfast, lunch (we can provide packed lunches) and dinner and also includes a pre-dinner aperitif and wine with dinner. We can customize your stay, so below is just an example of how you could have your "Mull Experience".

Please note that the below itinerary is an example only and is weather dependent.

Day

1

We pick you up at the harbour pontoons at around 1500. After unpacking and settling in, (there is no dress code as life aboard is informal) we give you a short introduction to life on board our small ship. Over a champagne reception you will meet your chef and skipper who will then give you a brief introduction to the various activities you have planned (or we have planned for you). Then it’s a scrumptious dinner from locally sourced food.

Day

2

A hearty breakfast and today we are off for a sail. We lift anchor and set sail across to the Isle of Oronsay. Just south of Oronsay island lies secluded Loch Drumbuie situated between the island and the mainland. A squeeze between high sided cliffs and we are in a perfectly sheltered anchorage. Lunch is provided and here you can fish and swim or just relax on deck. In the afternoon we lift anchor and head back for a "sunset cruise" to the Tobermory anchorage. On the way out and back we keep a good look out for all that wildlife.

Day

3

We have planned a day excursion to the Isle of Iona. You can travel by public transport both there and back. The bus stop is very close to where you are dropped at the marina pontoon. It takes you to Fionnphort where there is a regular short ferry ride to Iona. Iona is a special spiritual island and birthplace of Western Christianity, where, in AD563, Saint Columba founded an abbey when he traveled over from Ireland. Iona has been for centuries a place of Christian pilgrimage and here the early abbey monks created the wonderful Book of Kells. Saint Columba and 48 Scottish kings, including Macbeth, as well as some Irish and French kings, are buried on Iona. One can walk in peaceful solitude along the island paths away from the Abbey.

Day

4

After breakfast we can take you ashore for a walking exploration of the island and Tobermory Distillery. For the energetic there is a Munro to climb or some more gentle, but beautiful nearby coastal walks.

Day

5

Back to sea with a fast RIB trip to the Island of Staffa. Staffa has one of the world's most spectacular natural marvels in Fingal's cave - one of the islands many sea caves. Mendelssohn's Hebridean Overture famously captures the soaring beauty of the island and the Fingal's Cave towering, six-sided basalt columns. You will also visit a Puffin colony on a nearby island.

Day

6

After breakfast we lift anchor for a sail down the sheltered waters of the Sound of Mail to Loch Aline. On the way you can help us set the sails before we arrive in Loch Aline. If time after lunch there are woodland walks and, at the head of the loch, is ancient Ardtornish castle and woodland gardens. Keeping our eyes peeled for whales, dolphins and eagles we return by the beautiful Sound of Mull to Tobermory where we will finally anchor for the night. Aperitif on deck and then dinner and malts.

Day

7

Disembark by tender after breakfast at around 11am - the end of your unique "Mull Experience".
